On Tuesday July 29, the staff of Keep Akron Beautiful and the Lowe’s heroes, will come together to improve and restore Firestone Stadium, home of the Akron Racers, in Akron, Ohio. This project is being completed before the Gay Games 9 (GG9) comes to Akron for the softball tournament. The softball tournament is one of the largest events in the 2014 GG9 games.
There are 258 participants in four divisions (19 teams total) that will be playing softball at Firestone Stadium, Pony Field and Colonial Salt. All three locations are being prepared and groomed for this event, including the replacement of the backstop, benches, stands and top dressing of the entire field at Colonial Salt. Colonial Salt is located on Wilbeth Road and is in perfect condition to supplement the activities at Firestone Stadium for this event.
Firestone Stadium had a wish list of repairs that Racers’ Owner/GM, Joey Arrietta, wanted done before the Gay Games, and the Fairlawn Lowe’s heroes are tackling the last of these projects. On July 29th, the volunteers will be scraping and painting the entryways to the stadium; putting a clear water-resistant sealant on the lower seating areas; and fixing up two planting beds at the entrances to the stadium.
Fairlawn Lowe’s Store Manager, Gary Sutor, was more than eager to get started and has begun collecting tools and items for the workday. Fifteen of Gary’s employees will be volunteering their time on July 29th and are being assigned different tasks to match their abilities. This is the second year that Lowe’s has worked with Keep Akron Beautiful on a beautification and community restoration project.
To see the Lowe’s heroes in action please join us at Firestone Stadium on July 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Firestone Stadium is located at 1575 Firestone Parkway, Akron, OH 44301. All championship games will be held at Firestone Stadium. The women’s finals will be on Wednesday August 13th at 1:00 p.m. The other three divisions will begin their elimination and end with their championship games on Thursday, August 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The public is welcome to come for the games. There is no charge to watch any and all of the games.
