Litter & Illegal Dump Cleanup Trailer does big things in its first year!

Last fall, thanks to Citizens Bank Foundation, Keep Akron Beautiful added a new member to its family, the Litter & Illegal Dump Cleanup Trailer. The trailer comes equipped with the supplies needed to do large scale clean-up projects—which is exactly what happened this spring! The trailer has already been used to help complete three projects with three more groups planning to use it just this month!

The biggest project the trailer has been a part of so far took place during Clean Up Akron Month. The Summit Lake Clean Up Project, headed by Nolan James, utilized the trailer over the course of two weekends. An estimated 300 volunteers came out to help perform a clean-up of Summit Lake—the Summit Lake CLC side was cleaned on April 18th & the Margaret Park Elementary School side was cleaned on April 25th.

Groups were able to use rakes, pitch forks, litter grabbers & gloves to clean the edge of the lake, while some volunteers donned waders & kayaks to remove litter from the center of the lake! Some of the more notable items found were 15 tires, bed frames, furniture, multiple rolls of carpet, a child’s John Deer Tractor, a car bumper needles & meth labs. Fortunately, the Akron Police department was on site to ensure the safety of volunteers as well as to help transport the mass amount of collected litter.

The Litter & Illegal Dump Cleanup Trailer was able to help the Summit Lake Clean Up Project hold its first ever two-weekend clean-up, resulting in a more thorough cleaning of Summit Lake. Summit Lake continues to be a chronically littered area in Akron, but thanks to the trailer, Ohio Erie Canalway Coalition, My Neighborhood Our Akron, The City of Akron, Akron Police Department, Beneficial Building Services, and Ward 9 Council, residents were able to take a more active role in stopping that trend!

2015 marked one of the largest Clean Up Akron Month litter hauls for Keep Akron Beautiful!

We’re looking forward to seeing what else can be done with The Litter & Illegal Dump Cleanup Trailer and we think that the work done at Summit Lake is a fantastic example for people to follow! Check out more photos & videos from the Summit Lake Clean Up Project!
