Adopting A Site With KAB

By: Jamie Vanaman, KAB Intern

If you have ever seen a blooming flower bed in the summer time marked by a plastic lumber post with the Keep Akron Beautiful logo, then you have come across an Adopt-A-Site! The Adopt-A-Site program, which models the Floweerscape program, has been providing the ability for volunteers to plan, prep, plant, and maintain a public garden on City of Akron property for 25 years. These volunteers range from scouting groups to senior citizen groups, while under the supervision of our nonprofit agency.adopt a site
The goal of the program is to extend public land beautification out into the neighborhoods in the City of Akron. The sites include traffic islands, triangles, corners, boulevards, gardens around school signs, parks, and in front of fire departments. Our main goal is to have the gardens blooming with color all summer long!adopt a site_2

There are also many benefits to adopting a site or becoming part of the Adopt-A-Site program.  In your first year, the Flowerscape Director will help you design the landscape plan and choose plant materials (colors, number, and height of plants). Also during this year the Flowerscape crew will prepare the site for planting, and the contact person is given a flower order that gives groups wholesale prices on a variety of annuals, perennials, and soil amendments. You are also given free water from the City of Akron; an invitation to a clinic where you will learn what is best to plant and how to plant;  free trash bags and pick up/disposal of spent plant material, and access to professional advice for site maintenance and pest management problems during the growing season.

Hopefully after reading this you have decided to join the almost 70 sites located in the 10 wards of the city! There are some basic criteria that must be met to become an Adopt-A-Site:
