Tickets for the 13th Annual Dreamscape Makeover Raffle are finally available and you can purchase yours online for a chance to win today! The Dreamscape Makeover Raffle is Keep Akron Beautiful’s annual fundraiser that was developed 12 years ago to help support our public land beautification program, Flowerscape. Thanks to our sponsor, SummaCare, and our 23 Vendor Partners, we are able to provide one lucky winner with a professionally designed front or back yard makeover, valued at $10,000.
Raffle tickets are $25 each or five for $100. Tickets can be purchased at the agency office located at 850 East Market Street, Akron, or the following locations: Dayton Nurseries, Inc., Donzells Flower & Garden Center, Inc., Graf Growers Garden Center, Paul’s Greenhouse, and Suncrest Gardens. The winning ticket will be drawn on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Alexander Park on West Market Street. The winner will have until the end of June to meet with this year’s landscape designer and project manager, Dave Thomas of RG Thomas Landscape and Design, to create their plan for the landscape transformation the week of August 1-5, 2016. The grand prize winner may choose to make over the front or back yard of their property. In addition to the grand prize ticket, there are three runner-up prizes which include 4 yards of mulch or compost blown into landscaped beds by TerraScape, LTD, a birdbath donated by Suncrest Gardens and a basket of gardening supplies, courtesy of Graf Growers Garden Center.

KAB Seeking Summer Interns

Are you looking for an internship? Do you want to make a difference this summer? Are you ready to “Improve Akron’s quality of life through beautification and responsible environmental management”? If the answer is yes, then Keep Akron Beautiful has the perfect opportunity for you!

KAB is looking for detail-oriented and organized students who are focused and productive. If you have strong verbal and written skills, a positive and respectful attitude and a willingness to learn, then you might be the right fit!

As an Intern for KAB, you will work directly with the Communications and Volunteer Project Manager, Helen Dauka, to hone your skills in public relations, event planning, marketing, social media, blogging and much more! You will be gain experience working with a nonprofit team who is ready to help mentor and guide you as you develop professional and practical work skills. Students may receive college credit for their work; however, it is the student’s responsibility to petition for the credit through their university or college program.

Current KAB intern, Willa Neale, stated that, my time at Keep Akron Beautiful has helped me to really develop as a professional. Working in the office has given me the tools to grow in my field, and I am much more confident in my abilities because of all of the support that I receive here. No two days are the same here, and I am grateful for a new experience each day!”

Jamie Vanaman, who is also currently interning, expressed that, “I was so surprised by the amount of responsibility Helen placed on me at first, but she helped me learn a lot so quickly and I feel more prepared to be applying for other internships!”

Some interns enjoy their experience so much that they continue to volunteer at events, or even extend their internship. Former KAB Intern, Shelby Baker spent two semesters with Keep Akron Beautiful, and keeps in contact with the staff. When asked how this internship has effected her professionally, she said, “it prepared me for the real world. I got the chance to help manage events, design advertising and marketing for fundraisers, and got to meet tons of people in the field.” Shelby also shared that her favorite thing about working at Keep Akron Beautiful was, “working with the awesome staff and getting out into the city and being able to get my hands dirty to help keep Akron beautiful.”

Downtown Akron Partnership’s Green & Clean is Back & Better Than Ever!

Downtown Akron Partnership’s ninth annual event, Green and Clean, is right around the corner! Green and Clean is an event that engages the community to make downtown “vibrant and valuable.” The Clean Team assists local businesses, community members and students with projects around their downtown property or within the district. Green & Clean will start on Earth Day, April 22nd and end Friday, May 20th. All volunteers will receive a Green & Clean t-shirt, as well as lunch at the Volunteer Picnic at Lock 3 on May 20th.
Volunteers can choose from the following shifts:
Friday, April 22: 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
Friday, April 22: 1:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Friday, April 29: 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
Friday, April 29: 1:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Friday, May 6: 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
Friday, May 6: 1:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Friday, May 20: 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.
How does all of this tie in with keep Akron Beautiful? You can submit ideas for clean-up projects anywhere in Akron. Downtown Akron Partnership will take care of projects that take place in downtown and Keep Akron Beautiful will help with projects suggested outside of that parameter, as long as they fit within our mission.

Reserve a Community Improvement Trailer TODAY!

Keep Akron Beautiful is accepting reservations for the Community Pride Trailer and Litter and Illegal Dump Cleanup Trailer for projects taking place from April until the end of October. You and a group of friends can reserve one of the trailers now by visiting http://www.keepakronbeautiful.org/kab-trailers or by visiting the Keep Akron Beautiful Office. You can also visit our website for more information on the requirements, safety commitments and equipment list for the program.

 

The Litter and Illegal Dump Cleanup Trailer is perfect for a large scale cleanup! It is fully equipped with tools and all the necessary equipment for a successful large community or neighborhood litter cleanup or illegal dumping eradication event.

Do you have a bigger project in mind? The Community Pride Trailer, which was made possible by generous grants from the Dominion Foundation and Citizens Bank Foundation five years ago, is perfect for large groups. This 25 foot box trailer contains landscape equipment and cleanup supplies for volunteer groups to transform  vacant lots into green spaces.

 

The KAB fleet had a large impact in its fourth year; during the fourth season with the Community Pride Trailer (CPT), it was used by 26 groups for cleanup events around the City of Akron. Keep Akron Beautiful was joined by 878 volunteers who contributed 151.5 hours (133,017 man hours) of their time to clean up 150 sites, collect 309 bags of litter and debris, collect 14 tires, plant 200 trees, 992 shrubs/flowers, renovate/paint 9 buildings and assist in graffiti removal. The Litter & Illegal Dumping Trailer was utilized by 11 groups consisting of 442 volunteers contributing 32 hours (13,504 man hours) resulting in collecting 586 bags of litter, 24 tires, 13 bags of newspapers and 17 bags of aluminum, as well as painting 4 commercial buildings.
