Neighborhood Partnership "Green Programs" Smart Development
With assistance from the City of Akron Department of Planning and Urban Development and the Akron Community Foundation, $32,500 was invested in community gardens in Akron. Seven non-profit community organizations committed over $39,000 in donated labor, materials or cash as match for garden projects.
One of the more creative projects involved the development of the “Pump House Urban Agricultural Center” .The Pump House AG Center is located adjacent to Summit Lake, near the tow path and Summit Lake Public Housing Apartments. The complex includes the old Pump house building, a chicken coop, and an urban garden. A “hoop” style green house was installed this past fall. The hoop house is 20 X20 ft. It is estimated that 1,000 pounds of tomatoes could be grown in a hoop house this size per season.
The Pump House Urban Agriculture Collaborative provided educational programs in conjunction with Let’s Grow Akron and Akron Summit Community Action, Inc. This past summer various educational programs were held, including preserving the bounty of summer Let’s Grow Akron Pressure Canning and Harvest for Hope working with AMHA residents and their children to grow produce and raise awareness for healthy eating.
