Bridgestone/Firestone
Firestone Complete Auto Care™ and Tires Plus™, was very helpful with CUAW as they have been for quite a few years now. MaryAnn Roach, a veteran employee of Bridgestone/Firestone, organized a cleaning of one of Akron’s chronically littered areas on Saturday morning, April 26. This dedicated group of employees braved the rainy, windy weather and picked up all types of litter and refuse for a few miles of public land in a neighborhood bordering I-76, one of Akron’s busiest highways. This group collected many, many tires as well as wooden palettes and general litter. Dawn Fritz, an employee of Firestone Complete Auto Care™ and Tires Plus™ ran a promotion wherecustomers could drop off any used oil, tires and batteries for recycling at two store locations. The willingness and dedication of theseemployees has been tremendous and they have been one of the leading Akron companies for community service and support of Clean Up Akron Week.
Downtown Akron Partnership
This year, the Downtown Akron Partnership collaborated with Keep Akron Beautiful and held the first annual Green & Clean Day held on Friday, May 2 of Clean Up Akron Week. This group recruited over 300 volunteers and helped to beautify downtown Akron by collecting 150 bags of litter and cleaning 14 alleys, 28 ash urns, 17 paper boxes, 61 benches and picnic tables, 11 bus shelters, 5 parking decks, 13 parking lots, 150 parking meters and 111 tree grates. Volunteers also swept 84 blocks of sidewalk, picked up thousands of cigarette butts and pulled weeds on 125 blocks … WOW!
Cascade Locks Park Association
The Cascade Locks Park Association has worked with Keep Akron Beautiful for many years now, participating in Clean Up Akron Week annually and conducting a second clean up every fall. This year 260 volunteers met on Saturday morning, May 3, and cleaned for four hours. Using the Mustill Store as a starting point, they cleaned for 2 1/2 miles along the canal in adverse weather conditions!
Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition
The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition conducted a cleanup along the Snyder Avenue trailhead and was responsible for picking up over ONE TONof litter alone!
Waste Management of Ohio
Waste Management, Inc. helped us in many ways with Clean Up Akron Week. Todd Brady, District Manager, helped our event immensely by allowing Keep Akron Beautiful free tipping service at the Akron transfer station during Clean Up Akron Week. In addition to providing this wonderful service, Todd also organized a clean up of the Akron transfer station with fellow employees. This very hardworking, dedicated group braved the rainy, windy weather and performed a thorough clean up of their location, which surrounded their building, grounds, entrance, land next to the highway and wooded area behind the station.
