Clean Up Akron Week 2012
Keep Akron Beautiful is encouraging all area residents to get involved in the 2012 Great American Cleanup™, by participating in the 31st annual Clean Up Akron Week, April 21st-28th 2012.
For 31 years Keep Akron Beautiful has been working to recruit thousands of civic-minded volunteers to adopt a public parcel of land to clean during Clean Up Akron Week. This year, Akron volunteers will be joined by the 3.5 million national volunteers who hold litter and debris cleanups on public lands and waterways, host recycling drives, spruce up community amenities like parks and playgrounds, remove graffiti, plant trees and community gardens, and host many more activities designed to improve the living environments that we all call “home”. Registration will be available online in March!
Clean Up Akron Week 2011: A Huge Success!
2011 should be declared the year of the volunteer. Keep Akron Beautiful had our most successful Clean Up Akron Week ever with over 5,500 registered volunteers cleaning over 106 public sites in the City of Akron and 34 schools cleaning their school campuses! Volunteer groups from The University of Akron Football Team, to The Boys and Girls Club of Western Reserve, to corporate volunteers from Bridgestone Firestone, and the 12 different Girl and Boy Scout troops all pitched in to make Akron a greener and cleaner place to live and work.
Throughout the week, items such as 39 tires, traffic cones, trash cans, bed frames, mattresses, couches and construction equipment were collected along with 6 tons of GLAD bagged trash that were picked up by our amazing volunteers.
The Super Saturday picnic held on May 7th was also a hit! Over 800 Clean Up Akron Week volunteers came to the Akron Zoo for a free volunteer appreciation picnic and awards ceremony. Orbit from the Akron Aeros, Cool Rider from Metro RTA, Buck from Acme and the Walsh Jesuit High School Stage Band entertained the crowd, while Mayor Plusquellic and Summit County Executive Russ Pry offered warm words of encouragement and congratulations to the assembled volunteers!
Clean Up Akron Week is Keep Akron Beautiful's biggest public awareness event; we look forward to this spring initiative every year as it fulfills our mission to improve Akron's quality of life through beautification and responsible environmental management! Congratulations to each and every volunteer who helped to make Akron nearly litter-free! We look forward to working with all of our volunteers for our 31st annual Clean Up Akron Week next year!
