Clean Up Akron Week

Clean Up Akron Week 2010: A Huge Success!

2010 should be declared  the year of the volunteer. Keep Akron Beautiful had our most successful Clean Up Akron Week ever with over 5,000 registered volunteers cleaning over 130 public sites in the City of Akron and 29 schools cleaning their school campuses! Volunteer groups from The University of Akron Football Team, to corporate volunteers from Bridgestone Firestone, and the 10 different Girl and Boy Scout troops all pitched in to make Akron a greener and cleaner place to live and work.

Throughout the week, items such as 79 tires, dishes, garden hoses, bed frames, mattresses, bowling balls, and patio furniture were collected along with 10.2 tons of GLAD bagged trash that were picked up by our amazing volunteers.

The Super Saturday picnic held on April 24th was also a hit, despite the weather!  Over 700 Clean Up Akron Week volunteers came to the Akron Zoo for a free volunteer appreciation picnic and awards ceremony. Zippy from the University of Akron, Orbit from the Akron Aeros, Cool Rider from Metro RTA, and the East High School jazz band entertained the crowd, while Service Director Rick Merolla and Keep Akron Beautiful president and CEO, Paula Davis offered warm words of encouragement and congratulations to the assembled volunteers!

Clean Up Akron Week is Keep Akron Beautiful's biggest public awareness event; we look forward to this spring initiative every year as it fulfills our mission to improve Akron's quality of life through beautification and responsible environmental management! Congratulations to each and every volunteer who helped to make Akron nearly litter-free! We look forward to working with all of our volunteers for our 30th Clean Up Akron Week next year!
