More Winter Gardening Seminars Coming Your Way

Our wonderful Dreamscape Vendor Partners are still at it with their winter gardening seminars. If the winter’s got you down, they can lift you right up with gardening tips to get you ready for spring! Who wouldn’t want to think spring?! Check out the list of upcoming seminars below!


Located at 1015 White Pond Drive, Graf Grower’s will present a series of winter gardening seminars on Saturday mornings beginning at 9:30 a.m. until approx. 11:30 a.m. Seminar costs are $12/person. Speaker: Dr. Mark Miller, Education Manager at Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens In Columbus, Ohio
Ready to spice your container gardens with a plant other than geraniums?! Craving a look that is different and will WOW everyone that stops or drives by? We’ll learn how to add tropical plants to container gardens that’ll add interest and beauty all summer long.

Need to freshen up your patio or front porch, but are having reservations about the investment? Craving new ideas to revamp your current outdoor space, but aren’t sure where to being? Join our Landscape & Design experts as they give you new ideas and techniques that will add both beauty and value to your outdoor living areas.


FREE garden seminars are held every Saturday this month at 11 AM. All of the seminars are located at their Garden Center (937 E. Waterloo Road in Akron). You must register for the seminars by calling 330.724.0550, ext. 110. The following presentations are planned:

February 21,“Seed Starting Basics” – Speaker: Lee Paulson, Master Gardener. Whether you start out with a few seeds or go big with dozens of trays, Lee has some great tips and techniques from his many years of experience. Stating plants from seed is economical, fun for the family, and a great way to get a jump on the season.

February 28, “Beekeeping in an Urban Environment” Speaker: Geoff Westerfield, Summit County Beekeepers Association. Many people don’t realize they have beekeepers close by, even in the city. Geoff covers beekeeping facts, shows some of the equipment, and discusses some of the challenges of urban beekeeping. You’ll be able to try some local urban honey, too.



Located at 3459 Cleveland-Massillon Road, Dayton Nurseries will present the following seminars which will begin at 11 a.m. and usually last about two hours. February 21, 52 Weeks of Bloom and Color – It Can Be Done!Speaker: Michelle Riley, All About You Landscape Design. Did you know there is something blooming with interest each week of the year?  Even in the winter? Join us for 52 weeks of bloom and interest and discover new ideas to enhance your landscape gardens appeal!  Colorful power point presentation included.

February 28, Mums The Word Speaker: Bill Aulenbach. Barberton’s annual Mum Fest is a wonder to the eye! Secrets about Barberton’s Mum Fest and tips on how to grow and over-winter better garden mums will be discussed by Bill Aulenbach, a member of Barberton Beautification who has worked with chrysanthemums for Yoder Brothers (now Aris Horticulture) for 58 years.

More Garden Seminars are in Akron this winter for you to enjoy! Donzell’s Garden Center, one of our Dreamscape Vendor Partners is hosting FREE seminars at 11:00 on Saturday mornings. Please phone Donzell’s reservation line at 330.724.0550 ext. 110 to register for seminars you plan to attend.

The upcoming seminars include:

Feb. 1 “Nature’s Way™ Brings Birds to Backyards” Speaker: a Nature’s Way representative- Combining innovative design technology with quality and durability, Nature’s Way bird products offer features that other companies don’t. This presentation features a demonstration of these unique features and give you tips on how to bring the birds to your yard.

Feb. 8 “Growing Orchids in Your Home”  Speaker: Akron Orchid Society. The Orchid Society presents an extremely informative presentation each year for us. Whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced grower, you’re certain to learn a thing or two from those that have grown orchids for many years!

Feb. 15 “Purple Martins Majesty” Speaker: Larry Hunter, Portage Lakes Purple Martin Society. Propagating purple martins and educating the public on the benefits of these birds is their mission. Learn about these fascinating birds that are primarily dependent on the assistance of humans in areas east of the Mississippi, whose population grows each year in the Portage Lakes, thanks to the enormous efforts of this group.

Feb. 22 “Seed Starting Basics” Speaker: Dan Stefancik, a Donzell’s Garden Guy- Dan keeps seed starting simple for those just starting out. It’s economical, fun for the family, and a great way to get a jump on the season.

Mar. 1 & 2 Greater Akron Orchid Society Show-  There will be no Saturday seminar. The Orchid Show offers exotic orchid displays, orchid vendors, and experts on hand to answer your questions. The show is free and open to the public in our greenhouse.

Mar. 8 “Spring Seeding & Feeding for the New American Lawn” Speaker: Tim Duffy, Jonathan Green representative. – Traditional lawn care methods only treat the symptoms and deplete the soil of what a healthy lawn really needs. Jonathan Green products work by treating the cause of lawn problems and letting nature do the hard work. Tim will have some door-prizes/giveaways for those attending.

Mar. 15 “Gardening with Herbs” Speaker: Barb Oare, Quail Hollow Herb Society- Growing and harvesting tips for many popular herbs you’ll want to include in your garden. Barb’s many years of herb growing experience always make her seminars interesting and informative.

Mar. 22 “Bonsai Basics & Beyond” Speaker: Dale Cochoy, Akron Canton Bonsai Society- Dale has grown bonsai for many years and his experience is invaluable. He brings examples of plant varieties, demonstrates potting & shaping techniques, and care tips.

Mar. 29 “Vegetable Gardening Basics” Speaker: Lee Paulson, Master Gardener- Lee covers the basics for those who want to enjoy their own delicious fresh-picked vegetables. You don’t have to plant acres to reap the rewards of homegrown flavor– let Lee show you how!

Check-out the upcoming schedule of events happening in Summit County and surrounding areas:

  • Summit County Master Gardeners Horticultural Hotline- 330.928.GROW (330.928.4769). On Tuesday’s from 9 a.m. to noon from March-October you can call the Horticulture Hotline to ask garden-related questions and get advice from the experts.
  • The Sustainable Garden- 6-8 p.m. on Thursday April 11 at Furnace Run Metro Park (Brushwood Pavilion) at 4955 Townsend Road, Richfield. Sustainable gardening involves more than just proper plant selection. Discover how to maximize the environmental benefits of your garden by incorporating sustainable practices and design into your landscape.
