Revisiting Dreamscape 2014: Steve Williams and David Jesse

By: Nalee vang, Communications Intern

In our last “Revisiting” blog post, we had the opportunity to follow up with the 2013 Dreamscape winner, the Akron Rotary Camp. Don’t miss out on that blog post; read it now!

In 2014, lucky homeowners, Steve Williams and David Jesse, won the Dreamscape raffle, which allows the winner to have the landscape makeover of their dreams worth over $10,000! Craig Graf and Lisa Graf of Graf Growers Garden Center and Landscaping were the lead landscapers. Many renovations were done including planting trees and flowers, light fixtures and installation of a maintenance-free fence and a pergola. For details of the whole process, read “Dreamscape Makeover Provided Finishing Touches to West Akron Home“.

The results were amazing, and seeing the transformation through photos really showed how much work was put into this Dreamscape makeover. We wondered how Steve and David have been keeping up with their exciting change, so we did some catching up of our own with Steve:

Nalee Vang: What was your initial reaction after finding out that you won the Dreamscape Makeover?
Steve Williams: Well, first, [was] shocked.  We absolutely never thought we would be the winners! Then, our thoughts turned into what we would change in our yard now that we had the chance.

NV: The transformation in the ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture was beautiful. What was your favorite part of the makeover?
SW: Working with Grafs to design the space and then watching the transformation unfold. It was amazing to watch the craftsmanship that the crew from each firm brought to the project.

KAB-Dreamscape-DrawingNV: How has the makeover changed your home?
SW: We now have this amazing outdoor living space. We spend more time outside, when the weather permits, relaxing, enjoying the space and entertaining.

NV: Has there been any challenges keeping up with the renovations?
SW: Well, once the renovation was underway, we realized we would need furniture for the space as well!  Thankfully, we found some wonderful pieces that give it the feel of an outdoor living room, which complimented our existing patio area perfectly.

NV: Looking back at the whole process, what are some reflections or thoughts you have that you want to share with us?
SW: The staff of Keep Akron Beautiful were wonderful and did a very good job of keeping us informed about what would happen along the way.

NV: Were you pleased with the results?
SW: Absolutely!  We could not be more pleased with the outcome.

NV: What is some advice for future winners?
SW: Be prepared for A LOT of change in a very short time!  It can seem overwhelming at times, but hang in there, because the end result is SO worth it!

NV: Would you recommend purchasing a ticket for the Dreamscape Makeover?
SW: Most certainly.  By purchasing a ticket, you help continue the excellent work being done to beautify our community at Keep Akron Beautiful.  Winning was just a bonus!

Dreamscape Makeover at Akron Rotary Camp is COMPLETE!

By: Ashley Foutty, Keep Akron Beautiful Intern

This year, the Dreamscape Makeover process went a little different than usual. Ivette Immormino was chosen as the grand prize winner of the 2013 Dreamscape raffle when her ticket, which she purchased from board member, Eric Jones was drawn on June 6. Due to Ivette not being a Summit County resident, she transferred the prize back to the Keep Akron Beautiful (KAB) board, which chose Akron Rotary Camp as the makeover location.

Not long after our Dreamscape winner was chosen, Keep Akron Beautiful began working with our vendor partners to help transform the Akron Rotary Camp at Rex Lake into a landscaping dream for our vendors, staff, and especially everyone involved in the camp! Nick Roth of Nick’s Lanscaping of Ohio, LLC had already began his design for this $10,000 makeover and began implementing it on Monday, August 5.

In just one day, we were amazed to see what changes had already been made! After just five long days, the gateway at the Akron Rotary Camp went from a grassy, dirt drainage ditch to a large flower bed planted with annuals and perennials. It was also outlined by landscaping rocks to improve the water runoff issue at the camp. Topsoil and compost were donated and blown into the beds and prepped for two large new planting beds.

A canoe rack with lumber donated by National Industrial Lumber Company, was built beside the beach to help eliminate the clutter from the housing of the canoes in the pavilion. The canoe rack freed up the picnic tables where the children can now have more room to enjoy their lunches. Along with additonal room, the children can safely put the canoes away and launch the canoes from a new beach the crews added.

Numerous amounts of flowers, up lights, path lights, flood lights, timers, and a half moon-shaped patio was added around the camp, along with a new and improved irrigation system. It took a lot of teamwork to accomplish the landscaping makeover, and we are lucky to have such great partners to work with!

We would like to thank all of our vendor partners who helped make the Dreamscape Makeover 2013 a huge success! We couldn’t have done it without you!

Ivette Immormino of Rocky River, has transferred the prize back to the Keep Akron Beautiful Board of Directors and ultimately to the Akron Rotary Camp out at Rex Lake. The Akron Rotary Camp is just completing a massive re-development of all their buildings on their small campus and the timing is right for a landscape project this summer! Dan Reynolds is the Akron Rotary Camp Director, who runs the camp for the emotionally and physically challenged kids. We look forward to working with Dan and can’t wait to get started!

Designing the Akron Rotary Camp’s makeover is Nick Roth, of Nick’s Landscaping of Ohio, LLC. Nick’s Landscaping has been a long-term vendor partner. Dave Thomas of R.G. Thomas Landscape & Design, Inc. did a fantastic job last year as lead landscape designer, transforming the backyard of David Canfield, a Copley resident. Nick has some big shoes to fill but we’re excited to see what he will do this year, in 2013 with one of our most interesting makeovers to date!
