Akron Beautification Watch Mailing 2014

by Cindy Pantea

The 2014 Beautification Watch Awards have been mailed! This year 3347 Akron residents and 218 organizations/businesses were nominated and received a certificate.

Each year from July to late August, volunteers, staff, and/or citizens canvass the City of Akron for Beautification Watch Award nominees based on the following criteria:

  • Litter free
  • Well-maintained with flowers, shrubs and/or trees
  • Free of weeds
  • Stands out from its surroundings.

Through these folks, we hear a lot of wonderful, feel-good stories, such as how a neighbor bought a once run-down home and have turned it around to be a beautiful addition to the neighborhood. Or, other stories letting us know how much their neighbors love to be in the yard and/or take pride in their gardens.

Keep Akron Beautiful hopes everyone appreciates this small token of thanks for helping to keep our Akron beautiful, and it wouldn’t be possible to include so many worthy Beautification Watch Award businesses and homes if we didn’t have our great volunteers who take the time out to canvass the neighborhoods for this program.

In turn, we want to publicly thank Polly, the Flowerscape Director, and her crew of three: Chuck, Tim and Sue, who work so hard to keep up the beautiful flowers at 850 East Market Street.

Of course, as the address shows, this award is shared with the building, which includes not only John Eaton’s group in Customer Service, along with “J. J.” (John Jones), who keeps the yard nicely trimmed, but also all of the people working with Rob Snyder in Motor Equipment, who are conscientious in keeping the property litter free.

How to Nominate

If you would like to nominate your neighbor, friend or relative for a Beautification Watch Award in 2015, we take the nominations July through August, and we begin sending the certificates in September.

Thank you for helping to keep Akron beautiful by taking pride in your properties. It is up to all of us!

City of Akron Recycling Collection Division Shares Helpful Videos

by Cindy Pantea

Does recycling seem confusing to you? Well, the City of Akron Recycling Collection Division wants to help. They have recently redesigned their web page at: http://www.akronohio.gov/cms/public_works/recycling/index.html to include two videos that explain more about recycling. We encourage you to bookmark that website link for future reference.

The first video the city department added to their web page explains how the recycling process works at the Material Recycling Facility or MRF. In other words, it is what actually happens to your recyclables after these items leave your curb. The YouTube video, accessible from this link, is courtesy of Division of Environmental Assistance and Outreach of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The most recent addition to the Recycling Collection Division’s page is a second creative video, done through a partnership with ReWorks, that explains how NOT to recycle. It tells you how Akron’s curbside process has been made easier, why pizza boxes and yard waste should not be placed in your blue recycle bin, and most importantly, YES…everything you properly place in your recycle bin absolutely does get recycled. You can watch this fun and informative video below, and thank you for recycling in an effort to save the environment and help keep Akron beautiful!
