For the second year, Keep Akron Beautiful participated in the Blue Heron Homecoming at the City of Akron’s Water Reclamation Facility. On May 7, 2016 local exhibitors gathered to educate our community about the Akron Waterways Renewed! Program, the Water Reclamation Facility, and more.
People could enjoy tours of the Water Reclamation Facility with a chance to see the blue herons, get a fresh lunch, and even meet a Disney princess or superhero– all for free!
This year Keep Akron Beautiful asked, “Can you undo water pollution?”
During a hands-on activity, people tried to fish out as much litter from water as possible using their hands (covered in gloves!), scoops, and strainers.
Even the most dedicated participant found it impossible to restore the water to drinkable quality. Oily residue and tiny particles still remained. The easiest way to clean our waterways is to stop pollution and litter from happening in the first place!
Special thanks to Lynn Williams and the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition for helping with our education efforts on Saturday as well as KAB staff members Elaine Murphy, Jacqui Ricchiuti, Leah Heiser, and Helen Dauka.
New to the Homecoming in 2016 was the Blue Heron Mascot and unveiling of its new name. Meet Eco!
